Course Description

This course introduces various types of healthcare institutions and their structures then focuses on the surgical technologist and other surgical team members and their roles within such institutions. It presents concepts of communication skills and ethical, moral, and legal responsibilities of the surgical team members. Sterilization, disinfection, asepsis, and surgical environment as they relate to various clinical roles and care of the patient will be discussed. It introduces basic surgical instruments, equipment and supplies. Focuses include processing and care of instruments, distribution of supplies, and inventory control. In laboratory setting, emphasis is placed on principles and practices related to asepsis, surgical environment and identification and utilization of commonly used surgical instruments, equipment and supplies.
